Medisieve
Haemofilter removing magnetic agents from bloodstream.
Medisieve Ltd is a company that is commercialising a haemofilter capable of removing magnetic or magnetically-labelled agents (Magnetic Beads) directly from a patient’s bloodstream in a dialysis-like technique.
It has an initial focus on malaria-infected red blood cells, but the Magnetic Beads system can be designed to bind specifically to various different agents in blood, enabling the Magnetic Blood Filtration Platform to be adapted to different indications.
The spinout is exploring opportunities in acute hyperinflammation, gene therapies, oncology and severe malaria.
The Medisieve journey so far:
- 2014: spinout founded at UCL
- 2020: UKRI grant of £1.6 million to support first in human trials of IL-6-driven hyperinflammation programme
- 2021: £1.8 million additional funding to advance in-human trials, led by 24Haymarket.
- 2022: Phase 1 clinical trial for IL-6 met all primary and secondary endpoints, demonstrating safety and efficacy.

Professor Quentin Pankhurst
Founder
Professor of Physics and Director of Healthcare Biomagnetics Laboratory at UCL. In 2011, he set up the Institute of Biomedical Engineering based on translational research and experimental medicine.
Dr. George Frodsham
Co-founder and CEO
Dr Frodsham holds a PhD in Biochemical Engineering and serves as MediSieve's CEO. Recently George was awarded BBSRC Innovator of the Year and was named one of MIT 35 Innovators Under 35.
Dr Weng Sie Wong
Senior Business Manager
Dr Wong brings extensive experience of all aspects of university technology transfer activities from strategic IP management to licence negotiations and spinout formation.
As a Senior Business
Manager focusing on the commercialisation of medical technologies, healthcare engineering, medical imaging and AI-enabled healthcare innovations arising from UCL research, she has been involved in the formation of multiple spinouts and acted as a director on various boards.
Prior to joining UCL Ventures, Dr Wong was a senior technology transfer manager at Oxford University’s TTO, Oxford University Innovation, working on a diverse range of both life and physical science projects over a 10-year period.
Weng holds an MBA from Edinburgh University and a PhD in pharmacology from UCL.
