Gaussion has developed a new technology to allow ultrafast and safe battery charging.
Faster battery charging can shorten waiting times and accelerate electrification, but high-power charging can also increase battery degradation. Analysis of more than 22,700 electric vehicles found average degradation of 2.3% a year, rising to as much as 3% for vehicles relying heavily on high-power rapid charging.
Gaussion uses controlled magnetic fields to move ions more efficiently within existing battery cells, aiming to enable faster charging while protecting battery life
Aeon™ coordinates MagLiB™ across the pack, adjusting magnetic-field behaviour in response to different cells, conditions and performance demands. This creates a dynamic control layer that helps battery systems maintain stronger, more consistent performance over time.
Gaussion's journey so far:
- 2017: founded from research at the UCL Electrochemical Innovation Lab
- 2022: raised £2.85m in seed funding
- 2024: secured £9.4m to develop ultrafast, lower-degradation battery charging
- 2025–2026: opened a 40,000 sq ft London R&D facility and raised €24.5m, taking total funding above €38m.

Dr Will Mortimore is responsible for fostering UCL’s Physical Sciences IP portfolio into commercial opportunities across a broad range of technologies and sectors, with a key focus on Climate
Tech.
Will joined UCL Ventures from the University of Surrey where he managed technology transfer for the faculty of engineering and physical sciences, leading the creation of several spinouts and commercial opportunities. This has been built upon solid international commercial experience as a business development manager for technical products covering a wide range of industries from aviation to medical devices.
Prior to this, Will held a number of materials development roles from a PhD in fuel cells through to product development and scientific consultancy for the power sector.
